A device for loading jacks into a knitting machine pattern wheel formed with a multiplicity of radial jack accomodating slots comprises a jack loading station mounted on a frame 40 and sleeve 48 for supporting the pattern wheel relative to the frame with one of the jack accomodating slots in registry with the jack loading station, a guide 146 for supporting the jack for movement into a position radially of the pattern wheel, a pawl and pinion arrangement for indexing the pattern wheel to a position where the slots in the pattern wheel are presented in seriatim into the jack loading station and a sliding member 153 for introducing a jack from the jack loading station to the slot in the pattern wheel. Before loading the pattern wheel is held in the frame 40 on a sleeve 48 and the positions of the three pattern wheel body portions 21A, 21B, 21C are located by a template block having elements 68, 69, 70 the three body portions are then locked together relative to one another. The top cover of the pattern wheel is replaced in this frame by a cover 75 which has a single slot to allow jacks to be loaded therethrough, this slot is held adjacent the jack loading station and the pattern wheel is rotated relatively thereto for loading Jacks 25 arrive from storage drums 147 (not shown) down channels 146 to a magazine 143. The bottom jack is displaced by a slide element 143 which pushes it into the pattern wheel, the other jacks are prevented from moving by a plate 149. The slide is pneumatically operated and returned by a spring 155. Low and high jack feeding stations are provided and the pattern wheel support is moved pneumatically when either is to be selected. The pattern wheel is indexed by a pawl and rachet mechanism (not shown). In a modification of the loading station, the jack may be used as an electrical contact in a stop motion device which stops the machine if there is no jack in the jack loading station to be delivered to the pattern wheel. |
