Novel pentafluorophenyl-substituted alcohols

The invention comprises alcohols of formula C6F5CHOHR, wherein R is H, C6H5 or C6F5. Pentafluorobenzyl alcohol *(R = H) is prepared by reducing pentafluorobenzaldehyde with LiAlH4 or by hydrolysing pentafluorobenzyl bromide or iodide with an alkaline agent. Bis-(pentafluorophenyl) carbinol *(R = C6F5) is prepared by reacting pentafluorophenyl Grignard reagent with pentafluorobenzaldehyde or with ethyl formate, with subsequent hydrolysis. Phenylpentafluorophenyl carbinol (R = C6H5) is prepared by reacting pentafluorophenyl Grignard reagent with benzaldehyde and subsequent hydrolysis. The alcohols * were characterized as 3,5-dinitrobenzoates.
