The present invention relates to a backlight unit for a display device and an operating method thereof. The backlight unit for the display device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a light source module; a light guide panel for inducing the light incident from the light source module to the front; and a controlling sheet of a light orientation angle disposed between the light source module and the side surface of the light guide panel and controlling the light orientation angle of the light incident therefrom differently.
