PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a modified cellulose that eliminates the need for addition of excess chemicals and thus enables reduction in various chemicals remaining in a system, and a method of producing modified cellulose nanofibers obtained by fibrillating the modified cellulose.SOLUTION: The method of producing a modified cellulose includes the step (A) of preparing a cellulose raw material having an average fiber length of 500 μm or less and the step (B) of subjecting the cellulose raw material to chemical treatment. The method of producing modified cellulose nanofibers includes the step (C) of fibrillating and dispersing the modified cellulose to produce cellulose nanofibers.
