The method involves receiving a request to stop the running internal combustion engine. The kinetic energy of the running internal combustion engine is reduced. The internal combustion engine is stopped. An operating parameter is controlled is so controlled in reducing the kinetic energy of the running internal combustion that the speed of the internal combustion engine falls below predetermined threshold. The operating parameter comprises a modified target value for an idle speed of the internal combustion engine.
