According to an aspect, a method of operating a communication network comprising a data source and a data sink which are connected with each other via a communication network path is provided. In this method, at the data source, a first data packet stream comprising a plurality of payload data packets of varying data size is provided or received, and the first data packet stream is transformed into a second data packet stream to be sent from the data source towards the data sink. The transformation comprises: arranging the first data packet stream into a plurality of data packet sequences; inserting, into each of a plurality of succeeding payload data packets of a data packet sequence, data packet size information indicating a size of at least one preceding or succeeding payload data packet, respectively; generating, for the data packet sequence, at least one forward error correction (FEC) packet assuming that the payload data packets of the data packet sequence have been respectively extended to a common virtual packet size, and assuming that parts of the thus extended payload data packets which are not covered by payload data are filled with predetermined dummy data; and inserting the at least one FEC packet into the first data packet stream. |
