<p>A medical, handheld instrument, such as an ophthalmoscope or otoscope, for use in inspecting a structure of the human or animal body, comprises a mask or light shield 61 in the form of a plate with a U-shaped slot 65 that defines an aperture through which light 71 travels between a lens 60 and a mirror 62 and prevents light from travelling past an upper edge 67 of the mirror 62 and scattering inside the housing, impairing the image viewed by the user.
