A temperature detecting device comprises a solid rod 2, preferably of fused silica, transparent to furnace radiation say between 7000 and 20, 000 A passing through the furnace wall 5 and a solid state detector 1 such as a phototransistor or diode controlling the furnace through a D.C. amplifier and a transductor. The detector is mounted in a temperature controlled aluminium block 3 to minimise temperature effects. The detecter may be reverse biassed to have no effect on furnace input below a determined temperature. The rod may be mounted projecting from, flush with or below the furnace wall.
