Capillary-active products comprising one or more polyethers (I) R.O-(CmH2mO)nH and (II R1.CO.O-(CmH2mO)nH are treated with one o more acids R-O-(CmH2mO)xR11-COOH to reduce the adverse effects of residual alkaline catalysts used in the preparation thereof. R represents a C8-C20 hydrocarbon group, R1 a C7-C19 hydrocarbon group, R11 a C1-C3 alkylene group, m is an integer of 2-4 and n and x each represent an average number of alkylene oxide groups in the range 1-50. The product contains a minor amount of one or more alkali metal salts resulting from the reaction, and the acid used preferably has oxyethylene units equal to the main product.
