A method of encoding images according to the present invention includes the steps: receiving prediction mode information of a present block; and performing inter-prediction with respect to the present block based on the received prediction mode information. The prediction mode information includes information of indicating whether a residual signal for the present block exists or not, a merge flag information of indicating whether the prediction mode for the present block is a merge mode or not, and a merge index of indicating a block used to extract motion information of the present block among a plurality of candidate blocks including a candidate block list used to inter-predict of the present block. The performing of the inter-prediction includes the steps of: forming the candidate block list; selecting the block used to extract the motion information of the present block among the candidate blocks constituting the candidate block list by using the merge index; and creating a prediction block for the present block by using the motion information of the present block extracted from the selected block.
