The present invention makes it possible to easily input a plurality of characters by performing handwriting gestures in the air. A user interface device is provided with: a template data storage means that stores template data indicating changes in predetermined writing positions that occur when each of a plurality of characters are written in the air; a position acquisition means that sequentially acquires the predetermined writing positions when a user performs gestures for sequentially writing characters in the air; a similarity degree evaluation information output means that, for each predetermined writing position acquired by the position acquisition means, sequentially outputs similarity degree evaluation information indicating the degree of similarity between template data that is related to each of the aforementioned characters and data to be evaluated that comprises a predetermined number of the predetermined writing positions taken sequentially from newly acquired data; and a character string determination means that determines a string of characters that is related to the gestures of the user on the basis of the similarity degree evaluation information concerning each of the sequentially output characters.
