Water-soluble hydrophobically, associating copolymer comprises (in wt.%): (a) monoethylenically unsaturated hydrophobically associated monomers (0.1-20); and (b) at least one of them different, monoethylenically unsaturated hydrophilic monomers (25-99.9), based on the total amount of all monomers in the copolymer, where at least one of the monomer is a hydrocarbon (I). Water-soluble hydrophobically, associating copolymer comprises (in wt.%): (a) monoethylenically unsaturated hydrophobically associated monomers (0.1-20); and (b) at least one of them different, monoethylenically unsaturated hydrophilic monomer (25-99.9), based on the total amount of all monomers in the copolymer, where at least one of the monomer is a hydrocarbon of formula (H 2C=C(R 1>)-R 4>-O-(-CH 2-CH(R 2>)-O-) k-(-CH 2-CH(R 3>)-O-) i-R 5>) (I). The units -(-CH 2-CH(R 2>)-O-) kand (-CH 2-CH (R 3>)-O-) lare arranged in the block structure in hydrocarbon (I). k : 10-150; l : 5-25; R 1> : H or CH 3; R 2> : H, CH 3or C 2H 5; R 3> : 2C or ether of formula (-CH 2-OR 9); R 9> : 2C; R 4> : single bond or divalent linkage comprising -(C nH 2 n)-[R 4> 1>], -O-(C nH 2 n)-[R 4> 2>] or -C(O)-O-(C nH 2 n-)-[R 4> 3>]; R 4> 1> : -CH 2- (preferred), -CH 2-CH 2-, -CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-; R 4> 2> : -O-CH 2-CH 2-, -O-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2- or preferably -O-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-; R 4> 3> : -C(O)-O-CH 2-CH 2- (preferred), -C(O)O-CH(CH 3)-CH 2-, -C(O)O-CH 2-CH(CH 3)-, -C(O)O-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2- or -C(O)O-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-CH 2-; n : 1-6; and R 5> : H or 1-30C hydrocarbon. Provided that 50% of R 2>is H.
