The appliance (1) has a cooking chamber (2) that is arranged for cooking of food. A light-emitting unit (3) such as LED, is arranged in the cooking chamber. The light emitting unit is arranged with variable light intensity and/or variable light color for illuminating the cooking chamber. The lighting emitting unit is coupled to an adjustment unit (4) for adjusting the intensity and/or color of light of the light emitting unit. The adjustment unit is arranged with a sensor for determining a degree of contamination of the cooking chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a cooking appliance.
