The invention relates to metalworking on metal cutting machines. The method includes presetting the position of a cutting member in a tool housing relative to the workpiece, moving the tool relative to the workpiece in the direction of primary motion, and traverse feeding the tool. The cutting member is preset by first positioning the cutting member on a normal to the surface to be machined and rotating the cutting member about its tip by an angle of &eegr;=30-60° relative to the feed plane in the plane of primary motion, then rotating the cutting member by an angle of τ=5-60° in the feed plane in a direction opposite to the feed direction, and subsequently rotating the cutting member by an angle of &rgr;=1-30° anticlockwise about its longitudinal axis in the direction of a decrease in the primary back clearance angle of the blade, wherein the wedge angle of the cutting member is within the range of &bgr;0=60-90°. The cutting member may be in the form of a cutting plate or a cutting bit. The technical result is an improvement in the durability of the tool and in the machining quality of difficult-to-machine material.
