1,190,212. Vehicle suspension. K. H. SCHMIDT. 2 May, 1967 [13 May, 1966], No. 20362/67. Addition to 1,135,212. Heading B7D. An hydraulic suspension unit 5, comprising a cylinder having a piston 6 connected to a piston-rod of large diameter is associated with each of the wheels 1, 2, 3, 4 of a vehicle, the wheels 1 and 2 being mounted on one solid axle and the wheels 3 and 4 on another. The cylinder spaces on opposite sides of each unit 5 are connected together by a line 8 in which is disposed a three-way valve 9 having a connection to a hydropneumatic suspension device 11. The upper cylinder spaces and the lower cylinder spaces are connected together, respectively, on each side of the vehicle, by lines 14, 16, and 15, 17, which include stop valves 18. Lines 14 and 16 are connected by lines 19 and 20, respectively, with a multi-way valve 21 and similar connections are made from lines 15 and 17 to a multi-way valve 24. The valves 21 and 24 are connected through non-return valves and line 25 with a pump 26 and through a line 27 with a reservoir. In position 29, the valves 21 and 24 connect the larger cylinder spaces to reservoir and the smaller ones (i.e. in which the piston-rods are located) to the pump 26. Position 30 is the "off" position of the valves 21 and 24 and in position 31 the smaller cylinder spaces are connected to the reservoir and the larger ones to the pump. In position 32, line 14 is joined to line 17 and line 16 to line 15 by means of cross over lines 33 and 34. Each valve 9 has three positions, one in which the larger and smaller cylinder spaces of each unit 5 are interconnected and are also connected to the suspension device 11, a second position in which the cylinder spaces of each unit 5 are cut off from each other, the suspension device 11 also being isolated, and a third position in which only the larger cylinder space is connected to the suspension device 11. If the valves 18 are closed, a rigid suspension is obtained. With valves 18 open and valves 9 closed and valves 21 and 24 in either of positions 29 or 31, pump 26 can be used to adjust the suspension height. During travel, the valves 21 and 24 are in the closed position, 30, and longitudinal stabilization between the units 5 on the same side of the vehicle is effected by appropriate positioning of valve 9 and by putting valves 21 and 24 in position 32, diagonal stabilization can be effected. Lateral stabilization between the units 5 associated with wheels 3 and 4 can be obtained by closing valves 18 and by having valves 21 and 24 in position 32. A similar condition for wheels 1 and 2 can be obtained by providing a further set of cross over valves. The construction of apparatus is similar to that described in Specification 1,135,212, and includes the modification that a control member 37 is provided which, simultaneously with placing all of the valves 9 in the closed setting 13, also operates the pair of valves 21, 24 to place them in the setting 32 to provide that the lines 14 and 16 are connected to the lines 15 and 17 through the cross over lines 33 and 34.
|
