A cigarette filter rod comprises a mass of tobacco smoke filtering material encased in a paper wrap having an overlapping seam extending longitudinally thereof, the seam having perforated interlocks incorporated therein along its length. Apparatus for making the filter comprises a horn 14 into which crimped cellulose acetate filaments 10 are fed, and immediately beyond the horn, a tongue 15 through which the fibres are passed by a belt 19 together with a paper strip 16 which is wrapped around the fibres. One edge of the paper wrapper 16 is supplied with adhesive by a device 24 and the circumference of the rod determined by a circumference controlling unit 27, the paper wrap being given at this stage an overlapping seam. Interlocking perforations are provided in the seam by the teeth 28 of a perforating wheel 29. The wheel 29 is mounted on a shaft 30 supported in bearings 30a in arms 32 of a frame 31, the arms 32 being hinged by a pin 33 so that the wheel 29 may be moved in an arc to control the depth of perforation. Adjustable stops are provided for setting the wheel in the desired position. The wheel 29 may be provided with pyramidal or diamond shaped perforating teeth, or with needle type, chisel point, or bevel teeth. The wheel 29 may be driven but preferably rotates freely due to the passage of the filter rod. After perforating, the rod passes a heat sealer bar 40, for permanently securing the seam, and is subsequently cut into filter rod lengths. |
