The method involves storing several different cleaning programs for cleaning the printing elements (1-3) in a control computer (8) of a printing machine (30). The combination of the different cleaning programs is selected through a touchscreen (32). An error message is outputted and displayed during the selection of undue combination of cleaning programs. The duration of the cleaning program is specified by input through the touchscreen for the control computer.
