The invention relates to Industrial Automation and Control Systems, in particular to Substation Automation systems with a standardized configuration representation. More particularly, it relates to central user account management and device access control in such systems. The invention further relates to a method of accessing an Intelligent Electronic Device IED 1 in an Industrial Automation and Control System IACS for controlling an industrial process, wherein the IED 1 being assigned to one IED area defined by attributes of the industrial process, comprising assigning a multi-area identifier UserAoR indicative of two distinct IED areas to a user (2)) of the IACS, verifying whether the multi-area identifier assigned to the user (2) is indicative of the IED area, and denying access to the user (2) unless the assigned multi-area identifier is indicative of the IED area. |
