PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide translucent ceramic comprised mainly of yttrium oxide and being more excellent in light transmittance, and also to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: There is provided the translucent ceramic comprised substantially of oxides of Y, Si and Ta. The translucent ceramic contains 0.5-10 wt.% of the Si in oxide conversion and 0.5-10 wt.% of the Ta in oxide conversion and has an average crystal grain size of 10-200μm. The translucent ceramic is controlled of the crystal grain size of a sintered body by containing 0.5-10 wt.% of the Si in oxide conversion and controlled in the abundance of pores in the crystal structure by containing 0.5-10 wt.% of the Ta in oxide conversion. As a result, the translucent ceramic having high light transmittance and having characteristics of heat resistance, corrosion resistance, low dust-generation property and high strength is obtained.
