[Class 106 (v)] [Also in Group XXX] A method of supplying predetermined quantities of material consists in allowing material to flow by gravity from a hopper 1, Fig. 3, vertically through a constricted opening 2, below which a movable screen 3 is displaceable so that the material forms a heap in a chamber situated above an air-lock; the screen is then closed to cut off the apex of a measured heap of material which is then introduced into the air lock by opening an upper air-lock valve 4 which is afterwards re-shut and a lower airlock valve 5 is opened to discharge the material; the screen 3 is then opened, the valve 5 closed, and so on. The quantity of material supplied is dependent on the angle of repose of the material and the amount the screen is withdrawn. In Figs. 4, 5, the screen 3 is controlled by a toothed sector 8, mounted on the same shaft O, meshing with a rack 9 integral with a piston 10 sliding in a cylinder 11, under the action of oil-pressure and a counter-weight 7, the opening of the shutter being limited by a nut 12. The valves 4 and 5 are controlled by bell-crank levers 13 and pistons 14, slid in cylinders 15, 16 by oi1 pressure and the weights of the valves. One pump and one or more distributors may control several of these devices automatically. The setting of the screen opening may be adjusted by means of a return stop 21, Fig. 6, engaging a ring 22 movable longitudinally by a toothed wheel 23 and a worm 24 rotated by an electric motor. A potentiometer, having a contact member keyed to a shaft of a worm driven speed reducer may indicate the position of the ring 22. Specification 320,853, [Class 78 (i)], is referred to.</p> |
