In a thermal regenerator of the rotary ductstationary matrix type, the ducts 21 (Fig. 1) and 27 are simultaneously rotated by a shaft 28 which interconnects hubs 41 on the ducts and which extends through a chamber 12 formed axially in the housing 11 of the matrix. The shaft rotates in bearings 43, 44 which are of the split type enabling the bearing to be removed when necessary without dismantling the shaft. The bearings are supported by the stationary structure of the regenerator, and may be located (as shown) within the chamber 12 or axially beyond said chamber (Fig. 3). For vertical shaft regenerators (as shown) the lower bearing is a combined journal or thrust bearing. Access to the chamber 12 is through an opening 59 reached through an access passage (not shown) through the regenerative material in the casing 11. The bearings are supported from the ends of the shell by elements 49, 51, 52. Oil may circulate through the bearings by way of pipes 53. Sealing plates 55 on the periphery of each rotary duct ride on support rollers 25, 32 mounted in the stationary structure, the plates 55 being joined to the ducts by resilient frame elements 56. The ducts and the shaft 28 are rotated by a motor-driven pinion which meshes with a ring gear around the lower duct (Fig. 1, not shown).
