The invention relates primarily to communication engineering. It can be used to identify the cable via which a network device is transmitting a signal. For this purpose, a point is determined, on the outer sheath of a cable, at which the level of stray electromagnetic radiation arising from a signal is sufficient to be picked up by an appropriate sensor. Thereafter, the cable is identified by correlating the time at which a signal is altered and the time at which the sensor is activated.
