In a turbocharger, a rotatable shaft 12, Fig. 1, carries a radial-flow turbine-rotor 9 and a centrifugal air-compressor impeller 11, the shaft being supported by a freely-rotatable bearing-bush 17 abutting an immovable thrustplate 38, the bush being lubricated by oil supplied thereto through a passage 43 in a casing 16 and caused to revolve at a speed less than that of the shaft by the viscosity of the oil so that its speed relative to the plate 38 is minimal. The resultant axial-thrust acting on the shaft is towards the impeller 11 during normal operation; and any axial thrust occurring in the opposite direction when the speed of the shaft is small is taken up by a collar 39 and a sleeve 33 fixed to the shaft. Distribution of the oil is effected by an annular depression 19, radial apertures (18), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the centre of the bush, radial grooves 21 in the end faces of the bush and axial grooves (23), Fig. 4 (not shown) on the innermost surfaces of the bush. The plate 38 has oil-distributing grooves 39, Fig. 2, and bevelled edges 41 abutting a plate 37 to deflect leakage oil into a chamber 32. |
