The device has a vent opening (5) for discharging an air flow (9) from a passenger compartment of a motor vehicle, and a sound absorber (3) is provided for damping the sound (12) incident through the vent opening. The sound absorber is arranged at a distance recessed from the vent opening in a ventilation duct (8), and a sound absorption surface (13) is provided in the front side of the sound absorber in the direction of vent opening. The air flow passing through the vent opening is flown around the side surfaces (16,17) of the sound absorber. The sound absorber has a body (11) expanding in the direction of the vent opening.
