Abstract A winch is provided with a winding member having a square cross section. 5 The winding member 40 passes through a ratchet wheel 48, which is formed with a square central hole 50 so that it snugly locates about the winding member. The ratchet wheel 48 is dimensioned to fit between plates 36a and 36b with minimal play. A pawl 52 is supported above the ratchet wheel 48 by means of a clevis pin 54 that passes through the pawl and is captured at 10 either end by holes formed in plates 36a and 36b respectively. Accordingly, the pawl 52 swings downward under gravity to make contact with the ratchet wheel to thereby allow rotation of the wheel in one direction, (as indicated by arrow 56 and locking in the reverse direction. The pawl may be manually swung out of engagement from the ratchet wheel so that the ratchet wheel is 15 free to rotate in either direction unimpeded. |
