<p>A sheet processing apparatus includes a shift unit such as aligning plates 541, 542 arranged to shift a sheet to be stacked S1, S2, S3 or S4 in the sheet width direction such that the sheet is stacked at a position in the sheet width direction dependent upon whether the length of the sheet is equal to or more than a predetermined length in the sheet conveyance direction or shorter than that predetermined length. This can avoid the problem where a larger sheet or bundle of sheets S3 or S4 on a stack tray 504 overlies and obscures a smaller sheet or bundle of sheets S1 or S2 when viewed from a direction (A fig. 7B) in which the sheets are to be removed from the stack tray 504 or a take-out port side (A fig. 7B). The apparatus may include an intermediate processing tray 540 on which a sheet conveyed by a discharge roller 508 is stacked, a proximal aligning plate 541 and a distal aligning plate 542 moving in a sheet width direction for aligning the sheet conveyed onto the intermediate processing tray 540, and a finisher controller (636 fig. 5) for moving and controlling the aligning plates 541 and 542 to align the sheet shorter than the predetermined length in the sheet conveyance direction at a position shifted nearer to the take-out port side (A fig. 7B) in the sheet width direction than a position in the sheet width direction at which is aligned a sheet having a length equal to or more than the predetermined length.</p> |
