The motor vehicle (1) has an occupant protection device for a side portion of the motor vehicle, while a sensor (4,5) is arranged in the side portion for detecting the air pressure signals. A control device (6) is designed for detecting a pressure wave occurring before a collision based on the air pressure signal, and for triggering the occupant protection device by the detected pressure wave. The control device is designed for detecting the pressure wave based on the duration, amount and increase of the air pressure signal. One sensor is arranged at each side portion of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is included for a method for triggering an occupant protection device of a motor vehicle.
