<p>A method of controlling the data rate of a data transmission between a transmitter and a receiver, wherein data rate adaptation control commands are sent using a return path from the receiver to the transmitter, comprising monitoring at least one receiving condition at the receiver, for example, the fill level of the receiver input buffer, determining at least one threshold for the receiving condition to trigger data rate adaptation control commands, estimating the transmission time of the control commands from the receiver to the transmitter and adjusting the threshold(s) based on the estimated transmission time. The estimation of the transmission time may be based on the filling level of an emitting buffer for the commands at the receiver. Accordingly, by continuously adjusting the buffer triggering threshold(s) according to the variation in transmission time of the rate control commands, the adaptation needs are minimised.</p> |
