[Also in Group XXIII] In the making of very fine glass fibres an elongated body of glass is fed into the high speed and high temperature blast resulting from directing in a restricted path the products of combustion of a gaseous mixture in a confined space. The elongated body may be a filament of solid glass on a stream of molten glass. In the form shown filaments 17 are advanced by feed. rolls 18, 19 through individual tubular guides 22 into the blast from burners 31, 32 inclined towards each other at an acute angle and each of which comprises a body of refractory material 43 having a combustion chamber 44 therein. Gas and air mixture which may be at a pressure of about 2 to 6 pounds per square inch is fed into the chamber 44 by a pipe 51 and perforated wall 46 and the products of combustion which may be at 2,500‹ - 3000‹F and move at about 500-700 feet per second blast out through a restricted passage 47. A region 39 occurs at the point of entry of the filament into the blast where (the blast moves in a direction counter to the direction of the main portion. U.S.A.
