[Also in Division D1] Apparatus for making a tubular fabric comprises a set of rolls 1, 3 mounted for rotation about respective axes, means 5 for feeding a continuous fibrous web 4 to the rolls and for sequentially training the web 4 over the rolls in a closed loop constituted by sequential portions of said web superimposed upon each other, means mounted on one of the rolls for rotation therewith, for engaging the web looped over the roll and for moving the web axially of the roll in one direction, and means for driving at least one of the rolls of the set. The superimposed portions of the web are bonded together by needle-punching as at 2. At least one roll 1 is provided with circumferentially spaced axially extending grooves, each groove accommodating an endless chain with spikes or pins which project beyond the surface of the roller to engage the web. The chain is moved continuously and axially of the roll 1. Some of the set of rolls act as idler rolls 3 in frictional contact with the web. |
