The method involves emitting laser pulses with a defined transmission repetition frequency (fpulse) towards a surface of a medium. The pulses are received after reflectance at the surface and sampled. The sampled pulses are combined to form an echo curve. An actual signal form of the reflected pulses is determined and analyzed. The form and corresponding IST-analysis parameters are compared with a predetermined signal form and a predetermined analysis parameter. A medium and/or process characteristic and a relative change of the characteristic are determined based on comparison.
