[Also in Division G3] Apparatus for bringing an alternator into a predetermined phase and frequency relationship with a reference voltage comprises an alternator constructed so that the angular position of the magnetic field of the rotor with respect to the rotor can be varied, means for comparing the phase and frequency of a reference voltage with that of the internal voltage of the alternator or a signal representative of the instantaneous position and speed of the alternator rotor, and means for varying the angular position of the rotor magnetic field at a rate and in a direction dependent on the magnitude and sign of the difference if any so that such difference is reduced. In a synchronizing arrangement the alternator D has pairs of exciting poles d, q in phase quadrature fed differentially from movable and fixed brushes p, n and m on a D.C. exciter A. Coupled to the rotor is a tachometer generator I the output of which is compared with the supply in a motor G the rotor of which moves the brushes p, n to reduce any error. When the error is zero or small the alternator D stator windings may be closed on to the supply by means (not shown). |
