The present invention relates to a manual wheel chair and a control method thereof and, especially, to a manual wheel chair having an automatic braking device for allowing the manual wheel chair to safely descend a downhill road by automatically braking the manual wheel chair and a control method thereof. The manual wheel chair having an automatic braking device comprises: a main body; main wheels installed on both sides of the main body; and a braking unit mounted on the main body to reduce the rotational speed of the main wheels. The braking unit comprises: an inclination sensor for measuring the inclination of the main body; a reduction unit for reducing the rotational speed of the main wheels; a control unit for operating the reduction unit according to the measured value of the inclination sensor to reduce the rotational speed of the main wheels; and a battery for supplying power to the inclination sensor, the reduction unit and the control unit.
