A construction element 10, Fig. 1a, for a ship's hull, or deck, comprises a member 11 having a U-shaped profile in a transverse crosssection and made of a fibre-reinforced synthetic plastics material. Intermediate webs 13 and stiffening fillings 12 made of foamed synthetic plastics material may also be included in said elements. To provide support for e.g. engine foundations, a block (23), Figs. 3a and 3b (not shown), may be lodged in the construction element between one of the flanges 11b and an adjacent web 13, this block being fixed by glue and bolts (231) and made of e.g. metal, synthetic plastics material or wood. The element may be curvilinear. To form the hull of a ship, a plurality of construction elements 10 are disposed in a series of parallel strips, Fig. 5b, such that the joints between abutting elements in adjacent strips are staggered substantially in the manner of brickwork. A deck can be formed in a like manner from a plurality of elements 26, which are similar to the elements 10. A stringer 25 extends through square holes in gusset plates, or knee pieces, 27. A somewhat similar mode of construction of a hull and deck is described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown), the gusset plates being omitted and the stringer being fixed to blocks (2011) in the elements (101) forming the hull. Further blocks (201) in the elements (101) are secured to the adjacent elements (26, 261) forming the deck. In another example, Fig. 6 (not shown), the elements 10, 26 are joined to one another by curvilinear construction elements (28) to which the stringer 25 (or 251) is fixed. The elements 10 when forming a hull as shown in Fig. 5b may have an inner skin 1011, Fig. 7, attached thereto, knee-pieces 31 being fixed by brackets 30 to U-shaped members 29 lodged within the adjacent elements. As shown in Fig. 8, in a ship's hull formed by a plurality of the construction elements 10, blocks 20 are lodged in some of the elements to which the stringer 25, or a support 40 for a beam 41, is fixed by screws lodged in holes 60, 61, the beam being used to carry an engine upon shock absorbers 42. A stringer 50 fixed to blocks 51 serves as a keel. Other construction elements are mentioned with reference to Figs. 1b to 2b (not shown), which are not intended for use in the preformance of the invention; but a wooden block (20), Fig. 2a, may be included in the element according to Fig. 1a at one end thereof to which adjacent parts of the ship can be attached.
