[Class 80 (ii)] The control of a separate mechanical epicyclic reverse gear 10, Fig. 3, is interconnected with that of an associated multiple epicyclic change-speed gear G, Fig. 1, controlled by electromagnetic clutches and brakes, so that introduction of reverse automatically selects a predetermined ratio, e.g., third or direct-drive in the change-speed gear, whereby a desired overall reverse ratio is obtained and possible damage due to use of too low a ratio is avoided The reverse gear comprises a freely-mounted planet-carrier 15, Fig. 3, which can be slid axially along the driving shaft 11 to clutch a driven ring-gear 14 for direct-drive, or fixed casing-teeth 19 for reverse, and its shift-rail 43 may be controlled through solenoids, fluidpressure or mechanical means, by a separate lever B, Fig. 1, or by the same lever A, Fig. 5 (a), as that which controls the change-speed gear. In Fig. 1, the separate reverse lever B, controls forward, neutral and reverse through circuits 35, 67, 33, and also in its forward position F feeds current through a double lead 37, 38 to the change-speed switch-lever A, which moves in an H-gate 1, 2, 3, 4 for feeding the terminals El,... E4, of the change-speed magnetwindings in selected combinations. In its neutral or reverse positions N or R, the reverse-lever B cuts out the speed selector switch lever A and, in the reverse portion R, it also feeds the terminals E1, E3 establishing third speed. In the single-lever control, Fig. 5 (a), the gate of the selector-lever. A has a fifth channel in which it energizes the terminals E1, E3, Fig. 1, for third speed as before, and there are additional contacts 26, 21 at opposite ends of the crosschannel, by which the change-speed lever A also energizes forward or reverse solenoids 24 or 23 respectively acting on the planet-carrier shiftrail 43, Figs. 5 (a) and 3. Additional solenoids 60, 61 move the shift-rail 43 to neutral and are energized by a gate contact 27, feeding to either solenoid 60 or 61 through a throw-over switch 66 operated by the shift-rail 43 itself to ensure feed to the solenoid for the appropiate direction of movement. In Fig. 4, not shown, the reverse shift-rail 43 is operated by a double-acting hydraulic piston, loaded on each side by neutralizing springs.
