Preparing compounds comprising p-(benzyloxy)calix[6]arene and/or p-(benzyloxy)calix[7]arene, comprises contacting cesium hydroxide such as a base, with p(benzyloxy)phenol and paraformaldehyde, where the base has a concentration of 0.09-0.5 equivalent, relative to the p-(benzyloxy)phenol. An independent claim is included for p-(benzyloxy)calix[7]arene in cesium monosalt form obtained by the process.
