A method and apparatus for processing dialog on the basis of referring expression processing in a multi-modal environment are disclosed. A dialog processing method performed by an information processing apparatus capable of digital signal processing comprises the steps of: extracting referring expressions from an input sentence; generating intermediate referring expressions indicating modification relations between words forming the extracted referring expressions; and searching objects corresponding to the generated intermediate referring expressions in a predetermined object search range. Thus, a user can use a terminal efficiently and conveniently by using the terminal without an operation of separately specifying, to the apparatus, various referring expression expressing things or objects.
