1,173,979. Aliphatic aldehydes and glycols. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES OF AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND Ltd. 15 Nov., 1967 [12 Dec., 1966; 21 Dec., 1966], No. 51948/67. Heading C2C. Aliphatic aldehydes and minor proportions of aliphatic glycols are obtained by irradiating aliphatic alcohols with a source of high energy radiation in the presence of a solid catalyst consisting of cadmium oxide, zinc oxide,α- alumina, lead monoxide, red lead, antimony trioxide, bismuth trioxide, vanadium pentoxide, tungsten trioxide, molybdenum trioxide, cobalt oxide or copper which has been superficially oxidized to cuprous oxide. Specified sources of radiation are accelerated electrons,γ-rays, #- rays, X-rays and corpuscular irradiation produced by atomic fission. The treatment may be given in the liquid or vapour phase. The production of glycols may be restrained by effecting the treatment in the presence of free radical scavengers, e.g. iodides, iodine, boron compounds, benzoquinone, ferric iron, oxygen, nitrate ions, nitrous oxide, chlorine, diphenylpicrylhydrazyl, polymerizable vinyl monomers and cupric or cuprous oxide. Examples are given of the treatment of methanol, ethanol and n-butyl alcohol. Apparatus is described.
