1,175,989. Diisopropylated xylenes. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 14 Oct., 1968 [16 Nov., 1967], No. 52207/67. Heading C5E. Diisopropylated xylenes having the alkyl groups in 1-, 2-, 4-, 5-positions are produced by reacting propylene and xylene in the liquid phase, at elevated temperature, in the presence of AlCl 3 , the molar ratio of propylene to xylene being less than 2, preferably 1À6-1À7. The A1C1 3 may be activated before use with HC1 or isopropyl chloride. Mono-isopropyl xylenes produced as by-products may be recycled, in which case the combined propylene is included in calculating the overall mole ratio. |
