A piston for a compressor comprises base rings 2, intermediate rings 3 and piston rings 4 arranged on an anchor member 1 which engages a piston-rod 10, the base and intermediate rings being maintained under compressive stress by a nut 6. As shown, the anchor member 1 is mounted on an anchor 11 which is securely connected to the piston-rod 10. Guide rings 16 of bronze or cast iron are provided at each end of the piston and the piston rings are arranged in pairs urged outwardly by springs 5. Any leakage of gas past the rings is removed through channels 7, 8; the channels in the anchor member 1 may be formed by providing a member of polygonal cross-section. During assembly, the anchor member 1 may be put under tension by an hydraulic device, Figs. 5, 6 and 7 (not shown), while a first nut (17) is screwed up ; in these cases a cap nut (19) is subsequently fitted with the interposition of a seal (20) or (24). In Fig. 8 (not shown), the anchor 11 is omitted and the anchor member (1) bears directly on to the end of the piston-rod. In Fig. 9 (not shown), the nut (17) is fitted at the opposite end of the piston.</p> |
