<p>When sheets are successively fed by a sheet feeding apparatus including a retard roller, the position of the leading end of each of the sheets being conveyed varies. Therefore, intervals between the conveyed sheets vary. When a retard roller 55 is rotating in a sheet feeding direction, the rotation is transmitted to a pickup roller 53 and the pickup roller 53 rotates in a direction for conveying the sheet. When the retard roller 55 is rotating in a direction opposite to the sheet feeding direction or is stationary, the pickup roller 53 does not feed the sheet. Therefore, in a successive feeding operation, the sheet to be fed next is always conveyed such that the leading end thereof reaches a nip position between a feed roller 54 and the retard roller 55. Therefore, the intervals between the sheets are uniform in the successive feeding operation.</p> |
