[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Optical brightening agents of the formula in which R is an optionally further substituted sulphonic acid group-containing aryl radical and R 1 is hydrogen, an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl group, a carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid ester, carbonamide or nitrile group or a salt thereof, are prepared by sulphonating the corresponding compounds in which R is an aryl radical not containing sulphonic acid groups, with sulphuric acid and optionally neutralizing the resulting compounds with, for example, sodium carbonate. If the radical R 1 is also an aryl radical this may also be sulphonated by the reaction.
