A plurality of molten zones is passed through a body of material contained in a horizontal tube 10 rotating about its longitudinal axis. The molten zones are formed by resistance heating elements 11 separated by water cooling elements each comprising a collar 12, inlet 13, and outlet 14. The rate of rotation may be ¢-25 r.p.m. Tube breakage (as a result of void formation) may be avoided by the use of a sliding plug or a glass partition having an aperture near its periphery. |
