An exciting medium is used to produce a polymer deposited on a substrate (c.f. plasma deposition of organic material involving polymerisation). Nitrogen or phosphorous groups within each polymer former are then modified with a cation generating component The exciting medium is preferably (pulsed) plasma. The modifying component is preferably a quaternising Brønsted acid or haloalkane, especially 1-bromobutane, applied in the vapour phase. The quaternised group is preferably imidazolium or pyridinium. The monomer preferably includes vinyl, allyl or acrylic groups, and is most preferably N-allylimidazole. The material can be used in chromatography, gas separation, carbon dioxide absorption, and in the preparation of conducting polymers, nanoparticles, thermochromic dyes, light emitting electrochemical cells, lithium ion batteries, dyesensitive solar cells and super-capacitors
|
