A method for remote management of a target device coupled to a gateway apparatus, the method comprising at the gateway apparatus receiving a message from a management server over a network; determining that said message pertains to device instruction data on the basis of an object identified in said message; extracting said device instruction data from said message; extracting target device information from said message; obtaining at least one device instruction corresponding to said device instruction data; and forwarding said at least one device instruction to a target device designated by said target device information; wherein said message is formatted in accordance with an object-directed remote device management protocol; and wherein said at least one device instruction is expressed in accordance with a management instruction set associated with said target device.
