In a dynamo-electric machine armature comprising a core 10 having in each of a plurality of rectangular cross-section parallel open slots circumferentially spaced about the core axis a plurality of radially spaced conductor coil sides 24, 38 each having a rigid wall insulation 28 and resiliently restrained against radial movement relatively to the slot and each other by a wedge 48 longitudinally in the top of the slot, a resilient pad 42, 44, 46 between the wedge and top coil side 38, a resilient liner 16, 20, 22 in the bottom 18 of the slot, and a resilient spacer 32, 34, 36 between and separating the coil sides, a resilient bead or fillet 60 is bonded to the core and to the external surfaces of the coil sides on at least one end 62 of the core where the coil sides project from the end of the slot. The invention concerns vertical axis large hydroelectric machines; and with a bead 60 may be non-conducting, provided at both ends, and as well as being a seal and vibration damper serves as a blocking wedge to prevent downward movement of the coil sides and wedges. The resilient pad, liner and spacer each comprise a hard insulating filler strip 44, 20, 34 of phenolic resin, bonded fabric reinforced laminate faced on each side with resilient material 42, 46, 16, 22, 32, 36 of e.g. elastomeric silicone curable at room temperature; carbon black may be added. The wall insulation 28 may be an epoxy resin, and between one or both walls of the slot and the coil sides further resilient material 30 is applied, continuously or at spaced intervals.
