A hinge joint which may be used with a reclining seat back of a motor vehicle comprises a backplate 1 fitted with screw holes 2 for attachment to the seat base and a hinge arm 3 for attachment to the seat back. A torsion main spring (4) (not shown) is provided to counterbalance the weight of the seat back during adjustment. Two pawl levers 5 are pivotally mounted at 6 on the backplate and engage a fixed locking formation 7 provided by an internally serrated looking ring 8. A pawl operating member 10 in the form of a slide of truncated wedge shape engages the pawl levers to urge them into locking engagement and may be moved in a manner to free the pawls and allow hinge movement by a manually operated release member 27.</p> |
