PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element with excellent durability and a projection type video display device using the same.SOLUTION: An optical element includes: an optical functional body that is provided to a base material and a surface of the base material and includes an optical functional layer showing a predetermined optical characteristic; and a support member that supports the optical functional body in a state of giving a tensile force to the optical functional body. In this case, the tensile force is given to the optical functional body by bending the support body and the optical functional body.
