MULTI-CORE OPTICAL FIBER AMPLIFIER AND ITS COUPLING WITH MULTIMODE FIBERS

An apparatus includes a multi-core optical fiber (16) and first (18), second (20), and third (22) optical couplers. The multi-core optical fiber (16) is rare-earth doped to provide optical amplification in response to optical pumping thereof. The first optical coupler (18) is configured to end- couple a first multi-mode optical fiber (12) to an end of the multi-core optical fiber (16). The second optical coupler (20) is configured to end-couple a second multi-mode optical fiber (14) to the other end of the multi-core optical fiber (16). The third optical coupler (22) is configured to optically couple a pump light source to the multi-core optical fiber (16).
