1,213,774. Convertor systems. SIEMENS A.G. 31 March, 1969 [30 March, 1968], No. 16841/69. Heading H2F. In a D.C. transmission system, two A.C. systems are linked by two parallel series circuits each including a superconductive cable 1 (Fig. 1) and convertors 2-one a rectifier the other an invertor. Ripple components introduced mainly by the convertors can produce heat in the cable necessitating additional cooling power and are reduced by filters including smoothing chokes 6 capacitors 7 and chokes 8. L6 has low D.C. resistance and C7, L8 relatively-high D.C. resistance. Additional filters L9, C10 are provided connected at intervals along the cable to reduce ripple voltage magnitude which is said to increase toward the mid-way point along the cable due to the Ferranti effect on light loads. Chokes 6 may also be superconductors. C7, L8 may be at ambient temperature. Capacitors 7, 10 may be formed from the cable with the superconductor as one electrode, an insulating layer as the dielectric and an electrically conductive coating or sleeve as the other electrodes and being divided lengthwise of the cable to give the desired capacitances.
